I recall a message a while (i.e, months) ago on either -stable
or -hackers concerning this.  ISRT it's a VM system problem, it
can't demand page off ext2fs. I didn't follow it closely (no
ext2fs here) so that may not be entirely correct but sounds
reasonable given the symptons.
