Netgate website has great service, products, information and links. I hope no one assumed because I referenced their excellent information to assist in my explanation that my difficulties involved them in any way. These two EMP-8602 cards were purchased from Aztekcomputers.com. I just emailed EnGeniusTech support to find out if they are indeed pre-production cards, and if so ask for an eeprom upgrade or rma. I'll check the WRAP BIOS version monday and upgrade if necessary. Thank you so much Sam & Jim, -Pete ________________________________________________________________ Sent via the WebMail system at ipro.net From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Mar 26 11:30:33 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F3BD416A400 for ; Sun, 26 Mar 2006 11:30:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@meijome.net) Received: from sigma.octantis.com.au (ns2.octantis.com.au [207.44.189.124]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 93A0C43D48 for ; Sun, 26 Mar 2006 11:30:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd@meijome.net) Received: (qmail 3670 invoked from network); 26 Mar 2006 21:30:31 +1000 Received: from 210-84-39-124.dyn.iinet.net.au (HELO localhost) (210.84.39.124) by sigma.octantis.com.au with (DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA encrypted) SMTP; 26 Mar 2006 21:30:31 +1000 Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2006 21:30:26 +1000 From: Norberto Meijome To: "Kevin Oberman" Message-ID: <20060326213026.0766c95f@localhost> In-Reply-To: <20060316161550.2BECA45042@ptavv.es.net> References: <20060317015400.44485811@localhost> <20060316161550.2BECA45042@ptavv.es.net> X-Mailer: Sylpheed-Claws 2.0.0 (GTK+ 2.8.16; i386-portbld-freebsd6.1) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Update - Thinkpad Z60M X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2006 11:30:33 -0000 On Thu, 16 Mar 2006 08:15:50 -0800 "Kevin Oberman" wrote: > > Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2006 01:54:00 +1100 > > From: Norberto Meijome > > Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org > > > > hi there, > > looking into this laptop - i wanted to know if these components are > > supported (and whether there are any caveats): Well, i got the (lenovo|ibm) Thinkpad z60m last week, had some time to play with it, finished transferring my data from the Toshiba Tecra A2 to it and tweaking it a bit. for those who care, it's the 253044M model, with the titanium cover. > > > > - wireless card: Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG ( is this the iwi driver > > too?) > > Atheros. I believe the support for this is > still in progress. Yup, cannot resume (well, CAN but cannot use the laptop afterwards :-D ) if suspending FROM the virtual console used by X if I have DRI enabled. I removed the DRI option from xorg.conf and: - I can resume with no other problem than some desktop background corruption (XFCE4.2.3.1) , which is fixed by issuing a xfdesktop -reload. - radeon.ko and drm.ko are NOT loaded ( I still need to understand the difference between drm and dri...) - graphics perfomance has dropped (As expected), from about 750+ in glxgears to 220 approx. If I really need DRI, the alternative would be to switch to text console before suspending - i'm pretty sure it works fine in this case. Also, in the Toshiba, I had to set this knob : hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch to 1. This makes bad things happen on the z60m, so it's back to 0. Powerd seems to be working fine too. > You probably want to install radeontool and add it > to your rc.suspend and rc.resume scripts. > > Something like: > if [ -x /usr/local/bin/radeontool ]; then > /usr/local/bin/radeontool light off > /usr/local/bin/radeontool dac off > fi > thanks for this, i;ll give it a try soon. > You may want to run the DAC off when running on battery, too, to save > a little power. > > Also, put acpi_ibm_load into /boo/loader.conf and take a look at > 'sysctl dev.acpi_ibm'. yup, all fine there. Also, I had to remove device apic from my kernel config - else resume would fail in every single case (text mode so I would assume DRI has nothing to do). About to try to OSS sound drivers. - The fingerprint scanner is detected but i doubt it'll be useful (definitely not enabling the bios option to rely on the info stored in this little device for booting up :) ) - Bluetooth comes up as ugen0, and it gets switched on/off with Fn-F5, whilst both wifi and b-tooth are affected by the physical switch at the front of the laptop. IRDA is detected but i havent played with it yet. Battery life : i havent had much chance to test it yet, but it seems to hover around the 4 1/2 hours at 95%... not sure how it'll perform under normal use yet. If anyone wants any other info, just ask away :) thanks for all your suggestions / comments Best, Beto From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 27 13:30:49 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B64F416A400 for ; Mon, 27 Mar 2006 13:30:49 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@meijome.net) Received: from sigma.octantis.com.au (ns2.octantis.com.au [207.44.189.124]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4FFD743D45 for ; Mon, 27 Mar 2006 13:30:49 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd@meijome.net) Received: (qmail 11440 invoked from network); 27 Mar 2006 23:30:49 +1000 Received: from 210-84-39-124.dyn.iinet.net.au (HELO localhost) (210.84.39.124) by sigma.octantis.com.au with (DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA encrypted) SMTP; 27 Mar 2006 23:30:48 +1000 Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 23:30:43 +1000 From: Norberto Meijome To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20060327233043.34f199ad@localhost> X-Mailer: Sylpheed-Claws 2.0.0 (GTK+ 2.8.16; i386-portbld-freebsd6.1) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: How to debug Fn-xxx key events? If I run zzz , /etc/rc.suspend is run. on resume, /etc/rc.resume is executed. If I hit Fn-F4 ( == suspend event), the acpi sets the machine to suspend mode, but /etc/rc.suspend is NOT executed, and neither is /etc/rc.resume on resume. I don't know how to tell if devd catches the suspend event. I run it in debug mode (devd -dD) but couldn't see anything other than all the device motherboard's USB hubs being pulled off and added back in. I would love some enlightenment on this subject. In HEAD, devd should be firing off rc.resume, but the problem is in the suspend side. When triggered by Fn-F4, there is no way to be sure that rc.suspend is complete before the system halts. zzz (or acpiconf -s3) will complete rc.suspend before actually telling the system to suspend. On the other hand, Fn-F4 immediately starts the suspend sequence. While I believe that it can be set to wait for a specific period before suspending, I don't think that there is any way to assure that anything completes. njl@ or Bruno Ducrot would know more about the details. This has been discussed in the past; probably in acpi@. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. In order to make this work on my T43p, I set dev.acpi_ibm.0.events=1, so that Fn-F4 generates an acpi_ibm event (which is handled by devd) rather than a suspend event (which tells the kernel to suspend straightaway). I have the block notify 10 { match "system" "ACPI"; match "subsystem" "IBM"; match "notify" "0x04"; action "/usr/sbin/zzz"; }; in my devd.conf, so that it calls zzz, which does the right thing. -Ben Jencks From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 27 17:55:17 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9C39416A401 for ; Mon, 27 Mar 2006 17:55:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from swhetzel@gmail.com) Received: from xproxy.gmail.com (xproxy.gmail.com [66.249.82.197]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D354D43D46 for ; Mon, 27 Mar 2006 17:55:15 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from swhetzel@gmail.com) Received: by xproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id s9so966447wxc for ; Mon, 27 Mar 2006 09:55:15 -0800 (PST) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; b=IJPRWAgeZpBMM0KHAYeBa3oP66lbnUiyBBhZqQBJiwKhlkCtmap2GdzwyQnueiGXdg1LAPzP8H7XAuGH5Qgxcmq98w8MzTH1OGUoLYYYqQMkfdJKS2+dJLs0mATwbLQKEOJhPgdb4EaMO+uxM3uHFKiMJtLW2bdUsm7yvT2EsJk= Received: by 10.70.89.6 with SMTP id m6mr3187562wxb; Mon, 27 Mar 2006 09:55:14 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.70.27.14 with HTTP; Mon, 27 Mar 2006 09:55:14 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <790a9fff0603270955j2d380b7dsaad8254c14c82cb0@mail.gmail.com> Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 11:55:14 -0600 From: "Scot Hetzel" To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline Cc: wpaul@freebsd.org, sam@freebsd.org Subject: NDIS + WPA + Broadcom Wirles card X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 17:55:17 -0000 I recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv8135nr laptop and install FreeBSD/amd64 6.1-BETA4. I then updated the system to 03/25/06 using the cvs sources. After searching the internet I was able to locate a 64bit windows driver for my wireless card: none1@pci6:2:0:=09class=3D0x028000 card=3D0x1355103c chip=3D0x431814e4 rev= =3D0x02 hdr=3D0x00 vendor =3D 'Broadcom Corporation' class =3D network Windows/amd64 - 64bit driver (3.100.64.0) - 80211g.zip: ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_3020_5020/driver/winxp64bit= / Which I then used to create the kernel module for my Broadcom wireless card with ndisgen. ndisgen bcmwl5.inf bcmwl564.sys Which resulted in ndisgen building the bcmwl564_sys.ko module. When I load the module, I receive a screen full of 'fpudna in kernel mode!' which I tracked down to having occurred in the sys/amd64/amd64/trap.c source. Is there a better Windows XP driver I should be using? I then added an ifconfig entry for the interface to /etc/rc.conf: /etc/rc.conf: ifconfig_ndis0=3D"WPA DHCP" and rebooted the system. But when I grep for wpa_supplicant in the ps listing, it is not found. Then when I try to start wpa_supplicant (0.4.8), if gives an error when '-D ndis' is specified: # wpa_supplicant -B -q -i ndis0 -D ndis -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -P /var/run/wpa_supplicant/ndis0.pid NDIS: Failed to get adapter list (PacketGetAdapterNames) Failed to initialize driver interface But if I don't specify '-D ndis', then wpa_supplicant runs as a daemon. And displays: ndis0: WPA setup failed Now when I connect to wpa_supplicant with wpa_cli, I receive repeated messages of: <2>Trying to associate with 00:0b:0e:18:59:02 (SSID=3D'campuswpa' freq=3D24= 37 MHz) <2>Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out. 'PING' command timed out. Connection to wpa_supplicant lost -trying to reconnect Connection to wpa_supplicant re-established I can use scan and scan_result, and it shows the Wireless Access Points and their SSIDs. When I connect to this network thru Windows XP, the setup is as follows: Network Authentication: WPA Data encryption: TKIP EAP Type: Protected EAP (PEAP) Authentication Method: Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) Fast Reconnect: Enabled Validate server certificate: Unchecked Using the above information, I created the following wpa_supplicant.conf fi= le: ctrl_interface=3D/var/run/wpa_supplicant ctrl_intreface_group=3Dwheel network=3D{ ssid=3D"campuswpa" key_mgmt=3DWPA-EAP pairwise=3DTKIP group=3DTKIP eap=3DPEAP identity=3D"" password=3D"" # phase1=3D"peaplabel=3D1" <-tried with/without phase2=3D"auth=3DMSCHAPV2" priority=3D1 } Is this configuration correct? There is also another network, which doesn't use WPA. And when the system boots, it attaches to this network (campus) and receives an IP address. On this network, they use a web page to verify that you can have access to the network. Haven't tried it, as I don't have a browser installed on the system. The atheros wireless card in my T42p doesn't wake up properly when I suspend/resume from X, but if I use vidcontrol to switch to a different virtual terminal on suspend and back on resume then it works just fine. I've add a couple of hacks in /etc/rc.{suspend,resume}, but they're not called on a lid close event. g. You might want to look at a couple of sysctls: hw.acpi.reset_video and hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch. these might help. I am pretty sure that hooks to the lid switch are possible, but I don't think code has been put in FreeBSD to do it. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. The problem is it doesnt behave at all like the docking stations I have used in the past with Toshiba-brand laptops. e.g.: - Undocking when the laptop is running crashes the system. - docking when the laptop is already running doesnt crash, but only power and ethernet are passed onto the docking - everything else has to go via the laptop (USB). devd doesnt detect any changes in the hardware. - If I power down, dock , power up: a) the only devices that work are those from the docking station (kind of Ok i guess.) b) the VGA output is at a lesser resolution than the LCD (This could well definitely be an issue with my monitor - just want to confirm the vga output should be able to push 1280x800 - If from running on the dock I suspend , It doesn't seem to suspend properly ( everything goes off as usual, but the suspended light doesnt come up). and it's impossible to resume (either on or off the dock). Am I missing something? are these docking stations for MS-windows only? running ACPI, acpi_ibm , freebsd 6.1 prerelease. thanks Beto From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Mar 28 06:00:50 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 66B7C16A400 for ; Tue, 28 Mar 2006 06:00:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bms@spc.org) Received: from mindfull.spc.org (mindfull.spc.org [83.167.185.3]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DFC6443D53 for ; Tue, 28 Mar 2006 06:00:49 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from bms@spc.org) Received: from arginine.spc.org ([83.167.185.2]) by mindfull.spc.org with esmtps (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.52) id 1FO7Fx-00051l-IW; Tue, 28 Mar 2006 07:00:41 +0100 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by arginine.spc.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E4E9065499; Tue, 28 Mar 2006 07:00:47 +0100 (BST) Received: from arginine.spc.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (arginine.spc.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 50317-04; Tue, 28 Mar 2006 07:00:47 +0100 (BST) Received: by arginine.spc.org (Postfix, from userid 1078) id 133A9653F9; Tue, 28 Mar 2006 07:00:47 +0100 (BST) Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2006 07:00:47 +0100 From: Bruce M Simpson To: Norberto Meijome Message-ID: <20060328060047.GD25494@spc.org> Mail-Followup-To: Bruce M Simpson , Norberto Meijome , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org References: <20060328155017.219267be@localhost> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20060328155017.219267be@localhost> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i Organization: Incunabulum X-AntiAbuse: This header was added to track abuse, please include it with any abuse report X-AntiAbuse: Primary Hostname - mindfull.spc.org X-AntiAbuse: Original Domain - freebsd.org X-AntiAbuse: Originator/Caller UID/GID - [47 12] / [47 12] X-AntiAbuse: Sender Address Domain - spc.org X-Source: X-Source-Args: X-Source-Dir: Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Thinkpad Advanced Mini Dock X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2006 06:00:50 -0000 On Tue, Mar 28, 2006 at 03:50:17PM +1000, Norberto Meijome wrote: > I have the abovementioned docking station from Lenovo, being used with > a Thinkpad Z60M. I don't know if this is the same as the ThinkPad Dock II, but I'm assuming that the issues you are seeing are due to the introduction of a hot-pluggable PCI bus into the system at runtime. For what it's worth the EasiDock 5000 has similar issues. I was hoping to sit down and sort this out with some help from Warner but that hasn't happened yet because everyone's got lives... Except sound and when i tried opensound drivers and it just make kernel panics on boot. So without any success and time i reinstall it and install ubuntu dapper. It found all and works perfect. But i still want t go back to freebsd. So i have a question: have you get a problem with sound while installing freebsd? Thanks! (which is getting rather annoying as a) cant listen to music, b) cant use skype). I'm playing with the IRQs, trying to map which setting in the bios changes what. I am pretty certain the conflicts are due to same IRQ being used by several devices, and the OSS driver cannot cope with that. (read that in OSS' forum, as well as some info gathered from a panic I had). I'll send more info / questions myself when I have more information on the subject. I have one running 6.0-RELEASE but compiling -STABLE now. I had a problem I've observed before on other inspirons, when I configured the broadcom 4401 fast ethernet interface up the machine sort of locked up. The link light on the ethernet port goes out and the machine is locked up to the point that I can switch virtual consoles and I can type in characters on the console where I ran ifconfig or dhclient. Other than that I don't seem to be able to do anything but hold the power button for 4 seconds to power off. Any ideas? The first ThinkPad is a T41 which doesn't boot completely, the last message from the kernel is this: ad0: 57231MB at ata0-master UDMA100 after that, the system hangs. The second Thinkpad is a slightly newer R51 and it boots and runs fine until the display is closed and opened again. This will freeze the system immediately. In both cases the problem only occurs when the second battery is inserted. Does anybody else experience these problems? I've ran both NetBSD and Linux on the 1000 without problems. I currently have most things working on the 630m except the fast ethernet and the sound. I haven't tried power saving yet. There's also an MMC/SD slot that isn't supported but that is of low concern to me. The sound quality on these dells isn't great either. The wireless card works and X11 works with xvideo after upgrading to X.org 6.9.0 I hope to do some more testing tonight.
