I did some more testing:   if a directory is on an NFS mounted
partition and the mode  on the directory is 711 (and the directory is
not owned by root), after mount with NFS v.2 I can list the contents of
the directory.   Mounts with NFSv.3 produce expected results: root is
not allowed to list the directory.    I will submit a bug report.
