As I was given to believe by 4front-tech, FreeBSD won't support Quake
sound as you say. Even the OSS is unable seemingly to build a
work-around. 

Try booting to DOS/Windows for Quake. FreeBSD runs a mean Quake / quake
II server though  :-)
