Anyting interesting in the output of dmesg after these events?
Might be lots of things.  From someone else using your IP to a bad
renewal of a DHCP lease.  Try turning on the 'mark' option in
syslogd so that you see a regular pulse in the logs.  Then run a
ping into the box from somewhere else.  After an episode of the
problem compare the logs.  Maybe that will help isolate the problem.
