Except maybe USB External modems.
I've seen such modems from Acorp and they seem to be "software" like the
win/lin modems.
IMHO they should be avoided if possible. Aside from the bad quality and
probable lack of support/drivers they consume a signifficant amount of CPU
power, something that must be taken into account for those with slower
machines.
