My Inspiron 8000 has a Lucent Winmodem in it which works fine..
Some Inspirons have 3com win modems in them though.

BTW Matthew Dodd wrote a shim for the linux binary only nvidia driver
which works fairly well - laptop chipsets are a bit more ornery but in
general work.

Unfortunately his site appears down at the moment :(
