Actually, it's a vaguely convenient format for saving your own video. I've successfully captured video with fxtv and gotten it onto a VCD in a format that I could play with my Apex DVD/VCD/MP3 player. If I had lots of time, disk space, CPU, and working audio capture, I would probably use it to archive TV shows.. takes up less space than video tapes, and doesn't wear out.
