First, look at my comments for PR ports/30389, with my doubts if
this variable really needs to be set in all the ports you've filed
PR's for.

Second, I really think a '+=' would be better than a simple assignment,
at least insomuch as it allows for specifying additional MAKE_ARGS
on the make command line.
