Matthew,

A short time ago I purchased Free BSD 2.0. I have spent all day today trying
to install it and get rid of it. I can't understand how you can have a system
that offers so much have such sparce installation documentation. It has
really been a frustrating experience.

I printed out all the readme files and FAQs. Then I installed the kernel (I
think that's what you call it.). I was hoping to be able to install the
editors, etc. but didn't have any luck. I could find no documentation to tell
me how to do it. I can't understand why. When I installed the kernel, the
screen said, "specify a distribution to load. With repeated passes through
this screen you'll be given the chance to load one or all of them." It
sounded great, but how do you make these repeated passes? You have to go
through the installation process again? I went to install again, and chose xfree86. After a while the screen froze.
The Distribution Subdirectory said, "If the distributions are in a
subdirectory of the mount point, please enter it here (no leading slash-it
should be relative to the mount point). The directory you enter should be the
*parent* directory of any distribution subdirectories." I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT
THIS GOBBLEDYGOOK MEANS. With Microsoft Windows, you browse for your
installation files, select, and you're off.

I know the package included tons of great programs: editors, communications
programs, games, etc. But how is someone supposed to figure out how to
install them? One screen said, "If none of the listed options works for you,
then your best bet may be to simply hit Esc twice to get a subshell and
proceed manually on your own." If only there were directions on how to do it
on your own.

I'm hoping you can answer at least some of these questions. At least the one
about how to get boot manager off my system.

I know this all sounds negative. But I really was enthused about installing
the system and getting it to work. And it was so frustrating to have it not
work.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Mark Bibace
