I don't know about php and java, but i do have an altenitive for you.
JSP (Java Server Pages). You can find a tutorial about JSP, tomcat
(webserver, can be combined with apache - i be happy to help you
connect if you have trouble) ,mysql and more, here: http://www.kjkoster.org/java/content/packages.jsp
