Closer investigation reveals that I've getting this error:

    laptop# fsck -B /var
    background fsck lacks a snapshot

So, that explains it. The background fsck isn't running. So, any ideas
why it isn't snapshotting?

    laptop# ls -ld /var/.snap
    drwxrwx--- 2 root operator 512 Oct 2 12:09 /var/.snap
