OK, update done. perl5.8 installed, everything that's related to perl is 
reinstalled. Same effect, leaking file descriptors keep lying around 
until reboot.

All the information I've been producing today I'd say: yes, there must 
be some (serious?) bug in the kernel. "Too many open files in system" is 
not a good thing :-(
