It means the system went down with out 'dismounting' the root file system
('/') - It's a bit like pulling the plug on your Windows '95 computer before
it gets to the 'it's now safe to shutdown' screen...

It doesn't normally do any damage - you'll probably see it fix itself
(running a program called 'fsck') as the system comes back up...
