I've just committed a patch and some compile-time substitution
to also have automake pick up /usr/X11R6/share/aclocal by default.

I've tested it here, and it seems to work well.  Please let me
know if it's horribly broken -- if it is, please back it out
since I'm going to be getting on a plane to Europe tomorrow
afternoon and my connectivity is going to be patchy at best.
