Hmm.  It must be the DES passwords--I don't think it's the version.  I
tested this on 3.0-CURRENT, but now I've tested it on 2.2.5-RELEASE as
well, and the behaviour is the same.

To make sure we're talking about the same thing: I'm using the
password 'foo' for testing.
