GENERIC should work just fine for picking up both the master and slave on both controllers. You are sure the drive didn't die on you or anything like that, aren't you? I haven't heard anyone else have this problem. You may have a genuine FreeBSD bug on your hands. Someone more knowledgeable than I may know something about this, but if you don't get a response you should send in a pr.
