Well, I can't answer your question directly.  I can tell you that my
digital out works fine with just compliing support for the sound card.
The way I thought the digital out worked was that it just provides a
digital signal based on the analog out.  It works fine with me.

On a basic audio level though, the proper way to do this would be to
set all of your outputs at line level if you are feeding a
reciever/amp and do all the volume control there.  If not you can get
gain inequalities which then can cause distortion on the output of the
amp. That is unless you are using a very high quality amp (e.g. Crown)
which uses the volume control in a different fashion then others would
use it.
