That's not the problem. I wasn't clear---the only way I've been able to use swat has been with -a because I'm getting authentication errors when I try to log in as the swat administrator (root). I think what I'm looking at is pam related. My console is giving me messages like this: Jan 20 11:37:44 plover swat: no modules loaded for `samba' service Bret Ford >Make sure you don't start swat with the -a flag.
