FreeBSD is based off of 4.4BSD, the last release of Berkely-style UNIX
from UCB itself.
Linux is written as a kernel by Linus Torvalds, with several other groups
heaping on the rest of the OS.
Try browsing through this page:
http://keystone.westminster.edu/~fullermd/bsdvlin.htm
It has various comparisons between FreeBSD and Linux, as well as a few
other free UNIX's.
