You got rid of the sound/system file which holds all of these preferences. Now what you need to do is copy back the sound/system file and restart. If the response is still good, then copy back the Gnome file. If the response is still good, the problem was a stale session manager proxy file. If response is bad, then you've isolated the file. Delete it, and recreate those settings manually.
