This might be (probably is) old news: http://editorials.freshmeat.net/lsb/ It goes a long way towards redeeming the Linux community in my eyes. It might save Linux from becoming a hopeless morass, and should go a long ways towards convincing commercial software houses to port to Linux. Which should be good for all of us. It will also remove one of the main reasons I have for preferring FreeBSD to Linux in a production environment.
