Read through the FAQ and confirmed option _KPOSIX_PRIORITY_SCHEDULING
given the reference to errors involving threads.

Also began re-running using the upgrade method for 2.2 to 2.4.
# pkgdb -F
(answer yes to all prompts)
# portupgrade ORBit2 libbonobo
# portupgrade -rf -m BATCH=yes atk
# portupgrade -R -m BATCH=yes gnome2

After running the third step, the same five ports:

    multimedia/gstreamer, multimedia/gstreamer-plugins, audio/gnomedia2,
multimedia/nautilus-media and x11/gnome2

remained uninstalled/skipped. Again, gstreamer was the failure. The other
four were skipped.

When I began my search for notes/messages on gstreamer in the archives,
there were 1297 documents to review.

The documentation involving this upgrade seems very good. Need to face
facts that whatever the problem is, it's more than I'm willing to deal with
at this time. I simply have to try something a little less demanding.

Thanks for your assistance. No need to respond.
