If you stick with RELENG_4_6 you will get 4.6.2 plus security patches as they are released (and 4.6.3 4.6.4 etc if they happen). If you choose RELENG_4 you will get 4.7 RC and then follow it through release, patching, and then 4.8 once that becomes the current release. Are you running a private machine or is it in production? Privately you want to track RELENG_4 and follow STABLE. On a production box you don't want to change anything which may break it, you only want security patches so you would track RELENG_4_6.
