I personally find it quite difficult to glean complete information from moderated mailing lists. What usually happens is that the human bias of the moderator(s) prevents the dissemination of some information and the mailing list becomes useless except as a window to the worldviews and information the moderators deem worthy. As to the people you get help from, I daresay most of them have been around the block on this and aren't even paying attention to this thread. I personally feel you have to give others (especially those of science) the chance to reject information themselves, and not try to "protect" them from anything.
