On the other hand, the porter can always modify the call temporarly to see
where the problem resides.

Hmm, am I only one who thinks that we have too few policies for ports? I'd
like to see, at least, official policies for PREFIX-cleaness, CFLAGS
and file permissions (that is don't copy files using CP) honoring.
