The manpage of growisofs suggests this:

       Note that DVD+RW re-formatting procedure does not substitute for blank-
       ing.  If you want to nullify the media, e.g. for privacy reasons, do it
       explicitly with 'growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=/dev/zero'.

Definitely much easier.
