route add default <router address>

The ISP's router shouldn't require any changes.

I've had a bad experience when a router crashed & routed ate the default
route, disconnecting the system from the network :(  

Unless you have a complex routing situation, which it sounds like you
don't, you should disable it in /etc/sysconfig.
