As I said, I am running 4.2 on a 386 that does gateway/firewall duty.
For that purpose it works fine and with minimal swapping. I wouldn't recommend
running Mozilla on it though. :-) 
As long as what you are doing isn't too hungry for CPU/memory then 4.2 is 
quite usable on a 386 IMO.
