You're lucky your ISP's employees are capable of explaining something like
that.  What I got when I asked for help was:

"You bet I can help you.  You're running windows, right?"
"No"
"Mac?"
"FreeBSD"
"FreeB...wh.."
"Unix"
"Would you hold for a minute?................................................
.............................................................................
.............................................................................
......................I'm sorry, we don't support Unix.  But if you go to
linux.blahblah.com, there's all kinds of information to help you get set
up"
