I'm not saying they have no "say" at all, but I am very strongly of
the opinion that they have no right to criticize others or tell them
how to do their volunteer work.

It's already very clearly the case that volunteers are NOT motivated
by criticism or someone telling them they're being unprofessional just
because they don't that person's personal standards, that's a given.
When that criticism comes from someone who's already banked up a
certain amount of "currency" by clearly putting their own time and
resources into pursuits which represent a non-trivial investment of
same, however, then it does at least make the criticism that much
easier to swallow. It still doesn't make it desirable from a project
standpoint, but people are willing to take a _certain_ amount of
"talking the talk" if the person popping off has also demonstrated a
willingness to "walk the walk", so to speak.

If someone's only contribution is to occasionally pop up and say "stop
doing that" or "do it my way", however, then that really is
intolerable because all they're going to accomplish is to piss various
people off and *impede* progress while everyone's back goes up and flame
wars on the mailing lists ensue.

In this particular case, you'd think that even the most clueless style
policeman might have thought about the timing of it all and decided
"Nah, on today of all days, this point probably DOESN'T need to be
made in public." If nothing else, this is a clear case of bad
judgement in action.
