This is covered pretty well in the handbook www.freebsd.org and in the
INSTALL.TXT file from ftp.freebsd.org in 2.2.5-RELEASE directory.

In a nutshell, you can install using a cable as long as the system
that has the sources on it is a FreeBSD machine, (or at least not
windows)
