Make sure you are a member of group 'wheel', connect as yourself, then su
to root.  Allowing root to connect directly from outside is often
considered to be a security risk.

Alternatively, install ssh (from the ports collection), and you will get
yourself a nice secure encrypted connection that you can do whatever you
like with.
