Then ...  what's wrong with my setup?  Do you have a 164sx with a serial
console from which you can log on?  I mean, messages from kernel looks
fine, messages from userland is messed.

If it can help, I am attaching part of the boot-up screen I get from the
serial console.  You'll see what I mean...

Having CTS/RTS does not mater -- I run all my Alpha's with only RX, TX,
and GND.
