As it turns out, and I couldn't find anything specific in the
documentation, you need to install support for 2.2.x binaries, it was
called compat22 or something. While I'm there, I'm adding in 2.0 and 2.1.
Squid, DNews, Pine and others appear to run now...

Maybe this is something that needs to be very heavily emphasized on doing
an installation. I used the express install and had to select 'custom' and
manually make sure the options were selected. They appeared (in my case)
to default to not being installed.
