You can get FreeBSD free via anonymous FTP from
ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD. You might also want to check a
geographically close mirror site.

BUT, it's a B-I-G download, 620 Mb if you download an ISO image and one sees
reports of overnight installations if you install by FTP.  The CD set is
only US$40 plus p+p, and I suspect that this might still be cheaper than a
d/l for a student.
