FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE #0: Mon Feb 23 20:45:55 GMT 2004 root@wv1.btc.adaptec.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386

>Description:
System hangs silently during the process of extracting files from CDROM when installing the new R5.2.1 release. No error message is obtainable. AFter rebooting the machine, Disk RAID is destroyed (have to rebuild disks to restore).

This problem happens every time for sure, no exception, and as early as Release 5.2 beta. In R5.2 or R5.2.1 RC1 there were ATA interrupt missing error messages poped out. However, except the "ata-1 slave failure" message in the dmesg (actually on this machine, ATA-1 is not used), R5.2.1 has no error/warning printed out, simply hangs silently.

Before R5.2.1, the machine worked nicely with R5.1. The machine has a Tyan S2665 MB and a Promise TX4000 RAID card.

Below is the dmesg info:

>How-To-Repeat:
1. Insert R5.2.1 install CD disc1, boot it;
2. when sysinstall is up, choose "standard";
3. follow the instructions to create slices and disk labels on disk "ar0" which is RAID 0+1 with 4 disks. I usually have ar0s2a (/), ar0s2b (swap) and ar0s2d created (/home with Softupdate);
4. I tried selecting media from both local cdrom and "ftp2.freebsd.org", both have the same outcome;
5. Start the installation, the system will hang silently during transfering the files from CDRoM (or ftp server).
6. the machine has to be rebooted by pressing the reset button. And the RAID disks are found destroyed (need to be rebuilt which takes long time).
