I installed Eclipse 3.0 from ports, then /usr/local/bin/eclipse is
as follows:

-----------------------------------------------------
#!/bin/sh
#
# FreeBSD-specific startup script for Eclipse Platform
#
# See: http://www.eclipse.org
#
# $FreeBSD: ports/java/eclipse/files/eclipse.in,v 1.1 2003/06/17 17:39:48 nork E
xp $
#

DEFAULT_JAVA_HOME=
ECLIPSE_HOME=
DEFAULT_JAVA_CMD=java

(snipped)
-----------------------------------------------------

There are not values to be set properly.
