Yes, it can happen that a port fails for some reason - you need to look
into the output what's causing the error. Since there is a package, it's
most likely that the fault is on your installation, since the package
is built from the port, and it apparently works... if you don't have 
problems otherwise, it's easiest to forget about this failure. Reasons
can be very subtle; whenever I experience problems with ports, it's mostly
because an already installed dependency is slightly older than what the new 
port requires, and it does not detect it. For example, this week I wanted
to install ImageMagick, but it failed and I had to rebuild/reinstall
libtool. Same version, but other port revision. I assume it was because
I built the old libtool when my system was at 4.1, while it is now at 4.2...
After reinstalling, ImageMagick built and installed without a hitch. 
But when you don't want to find out what's wrong, just install the package :-).
