If Jonathan Chen's advice doesn't sort your problem out, then you may be
running some shell like bash, which looks for its own .bashrc instead of
.profile .

If that's the case, you could create yourself the following .bashrc
file:

	if [ -f $HOME/.profile ] ; then
		. $HOME/.profile
	fi
