The Lance was used because the only alternative was the i82586, and
you're welcome to ask Garret about that.

I'm not sure if you'd have trouble with two Lance-style chips on one
card though; they use busmaster DMA to talk to their memory, which
might also be a problem wrt. bandwidth.
