Thanks to everyone who helped me set up the proxy as follows : LAN PCs <----> FreeBSD Proxy <-----> Firewall <----> Internet But now I think I overdid it with the hardware config : Pentium II 300, 128 RAM, Adaptec Ultrawides. Even with Squid running on the Proxy (not transparent proxying so that if Squid crashes, people can still access the net), isn't this vast overkill for the machine ? There are about 50 PC's on the LAN. So I'm thinking of swapping the Proxy with one of my older boxes (a P166 with 64 RAM) and use the PII for a server. Am I right in assuming that RAM and CPU make absolutely no difference to the performance of NATd and IP forwarding ? That I should only ensure I have reliable NICs ? I presume also that the most important thing for Squid is the SCSI HD's ? My interest in this goes beyond the short-term redistribution of resources on my LAN but also if one were setting up an ISP, and hence needed transparent proxying for a very large number of users (several thousand), would FreeBSD still be able to handle this ?
