See my message a week or so ago that outlined what to do to use the
XFree86-4-server port along with a cvsup'ed /usr/xsrc to compile an
X server from CVS using the port.  Also, what sound chip do you have?
The support for the ESS Maestro chips was just backported to -stable
after 4.1.1.
