first off, try taking a look at my smb.conf file.  my samba workds
great...pay special attention to my [global] share.  you might try
making a backup of yours and using mine, but be sure and change the
workgroup name, etc,etc all that stuff that is different.  

also make sure you point it toyour smbpasswd file.  

also you have to test it with "smbclient -L localhost" assuming your
doing this from the localhost

one other thing just to be sure.  you are "kill -HUP <process num>" for
both smbd and nmdbd right?  let us know what using my conf name results
in
