Yes, but is better to upgrade to STABLE branch.

It is a bad idea to upgrade only some parts of sysetm, read message
here with subject "cvsup not useful" for more information. In your
case 4.4rc2 -> 4.4-RELEASE may be it will be normal to upgrade
just part of system, but I'm not sure here.

One probably will have problems with upgrading only some parts of
system.
