Has anyone had problems with emacs20 and X?

my setup:

freebsd-4.0-current (cvsup yesterday)
latest XFree86 from ports.
kde - post 1.1 (compiled from cvsup)
emacs20 compiled from ports.

when starting emacs up, it brings up the dialog window but never
fills it in, all i get is emacs and my xserver spinning eating CPU.
and a grey empty emacs window.

any known workarounds/solutions?

I generally stick to vi/gvim but i wanted to check it out.

thanks,
