What about etc/periodic and etc/rc.d? Would it be possible to add a /etc/defaults/rc.d and have /etc/rc take its scripts from there unless a file with the same name exists in /etc/rc.d? Then files could be installed automatically into /etc/defaults/rc.d, and anyone who wanted to modify something would just have to copy the appropriate file into /etc/rc.d and edit it there. (As a bonus, this is backwards-compatible with the existing setup.) Colin Percival
