Ok, since Martin is pushing for a response...

On the "-v" topic we've had:

    * 1 "this is silly"
    * 1 in extreme disfavor
    * 1 initial this isn't needed, ah, yes I see your point
    * 1 I don't care for it, but there is valid argument for it
    * 1 "I've never needed this in 15yrs of UNIX, but I don't care and
        `-v' is now in my kill file".
    * bdelinted (I don't know if he likes it, but if it's going to be
      done, lets do it right)
    * 1 committer doesn't mind it as long as it is documented as non-POSIX
    * 1 committer in favor (and provides valid arguments)
    * 3 committers in strong favor

So we have 2 against it, 2 not in favor but acknowledged the arguments as
valid, 2 don't care, and 5 for.  That makes 4 vs. 5, not to mention 100+
"I don't care enough to say anything".  This hardly looks like a major
force to block this -- looks like we'll go with "-v".
