To answer my own question: The OSTYPE variable is not exported, while HOME, PAGER, etc. are. Note the difference of the output of `set' and `export'. So, I guess, my patch is a valid solution to the problem. If noone noticed this problem so far, I wonder how many user of this port exists ;-)
