Ok the problem has been solved over a few posts. After running the upgrade script i still had no text. Im not sure if my original upgrade on Gnome kept it broken, but running portupgrade -rf pango and portupgrade -f gnomecontrolcenter2 eventualy took care of the problem and text and icons are now fine.
